"Halloween" | Frankfurt Book Fair | published by Editionpanorama

"Marie Preaud is a true "soul catcher" With her camera, she has the incredible talent to capt the spirit of the children and of their Halloween character, letting us see through the costume a glimpse of the soul. A mystical portrait photography for a mysterious holiday and a remarkable collector's piece."
Emmanuelle Chaulet, actress, director

"Children's culture needs to be taken seriously for the many worlds and shades of meaning that are available to us when we are young but unable to describe or access. Marie Preaud provides the possibility for that by taking photographs of her subjects that reveal parts of previously unknown personalities - some ancient, some never explored--that comment on Halloween's ability to transform us all not just into the tropes of horror that we know so well, but into what we don't know we are capable of being."

NEWS BOOK FEATURES 65 PORTRAITS OF CHILDREN IN HALLOWEEN COSTUNE

Frankfurt, Germany, June 28, 2010 -- World-class portrait photographer Marie Preaud and writer Catharine Murray have captured the magic of one of America’s favorite holidays in their new book Halloween: Portraits of Fantasy and Fear, Edition Panorama, 2010.

Marie Preaud’s work has been exhibited at Speos Gallery in Paris; the Light Gallery in New York; Zero Station; University of Southern Maine; Ubuntu African Gallery in Portland, Maine; Frontier Gallery in Brunswick, Maine and Gallery Kasten in Mannheim, Germany.

Preaud’s passion for theater inspired this body of work. An actress in Paris during the 90 's, Preaud has always been fascinated by the masked actors of Venice and Brazil.

Her work photographing children began in New York in 1994 when she was on assignment for Childbirth Instructor magazine. She also organized and photographed a project for disadvantaged children of Harlem to appear on Blue Flame record labels to create their own income from the company.

Choosing a character is where imagination is expressed. Whether a Medieval princess or a freakish Dracula mask, whether created at home or purchased at a discount store, the character is a window into his or her inner world. These portraits, taken over a period of several years when children stopped by the studio during their trick-or-treating, reveal the subjects as they truly inhabit their chosen characters. Through the work Preaud has achieved that rare feat of witnessing the inner fantasies and fears that children explore with the mischievous sense of fun which only Halloween encourages.

Catharine Murray, poet and memoir writer, gracefully embellishes each portrait with a few lines of text explaining the character and playfully imagining what might have drawn the child to that identity. The captions both illuminate the characters and add to the book’s mystery and allure.

At a time when most everything we do is rushed through and forgotten, Preaud, Murray and the children offer us a resting place, time to reflect on the power of self-transformation, even if only for one night. Through the images and text in the book, the viewer is privileged to meet children who invite us to remember the freedom of stepping outside the confines of our own identities and stepping into completely new perspectives on our world. The book carries us back to our own childhood moments of more open, fluid boundaries: a journey that for most of us is long overdue.
